Sustainability
Built In.
First-in-the-U.S. DNA testing. Wind-powered warehouse. Mayor's Sustainability Award. Not a program — the way the operation runs. Every fish on our floor earns a FishPrint before it earns a price.
The FishPrint System
Plate to fisherman,
with receipts.
FishPrint is ProFish’s proprietary traceability system — four steps that every piece of seafood moves through before it reaches your kitchen. No part of this is optional. No part of this is outsourced.
Sourced
Logged at origin
Every fish starts with a record — vessel or farm, catch or harvest date, gear or farming method, lat/lon coordinates. No exceptions, no after-the-fact reconstruction.
Tested
DNA-verified in-house
Our lab matches every species against its genetic signature before it ships. We were the first distributor in the U.S. to run DNA in-house — still the only one that gates shipping on the result.
Scored
Carbon FishPrint rated
Every SKU gets a carbon score that accounts for fishing method, distance from shore, refrigerant footprint, feed ratio, and processing energy. A real number, not a vibe.
Traced
Plated with proof
FishPrint cards ship with every order. QR code on the box unlocks the full record: vessel, method, score, DNA result, chain-of-custody timestamps.
Carbon FishPrint · Scoring Methodology
The score, shown.
Carbon FishPrint is the first carbon-energy rating built specifically for seafood. Every SKU is scored across three phases of its journey — no black boxes, no proprietary fudge factors. If a buyer asks how a score was computed, we show them the math.
Catch
- Fishing method (seiners, gill net, trawler, hook & line, dredgers, pots)
- Distance from shore
- Special carbon usage (ice, bait, auxiliary fuel)
Aquaculture
- Feed Conversion Ratio
- Direct energy use per pound produced
- Farm energy profile (recirculating vs. open-water)
Delivery
- Dock → distributor distance
- Refrigerant GWP and leakage rate
- Distributor freight efficiency
- Freezing + processing plant energy
The Infrastructure
Operations over optics.
Sustainability claims are cheap. Infrastructure is expensive. Here is what ours looks like — the pipes and the power, not the logo on the website.
Wind-powered warehouse
The freezer, the lights, the office — all run on wind, sourced directly, not offset-purchased after the fact.
Chesapeake filtration
Every gallon that touches a fish gets filtered before it returns to the Bay. The watershed the crabs come from is the one the water goes back to.
Propane fleet conversion
Delivery routes converting from diesel to propane — lower emissions per mile, cleaner cold chain, quieter neighborhoods.
Styrofoam recycling
We densify and ship back the foam shippers we receive. Not to a landfill, not to a charity bin — to a processor that recycles it into picture frames and insulation.
Ammonia refrigeration
Natural refrigerant, zero ozone depletion, a GWP of 0 versus thousands for common HFCs. The freezer that keeps your order cold isn't warming the planet.
Biodegradable sanitation
Every sanitizer and degreaser on the floor is certified biodegradable. What drains from the warehouse doesn't survive the Chesapeake.
